Bibb County was the 54th county formed and was created by act of the Georgia Legislature.  It was carved out of Jones, Monroe, Houston and Twiggs counties.  Bibb County was named for Dr. William Wyatt Bibb, a physician from Elbert County who served in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate before becoming the first elected Governor of Alabama.
