The land for Troup County, the 70th county organized, was ceded in the 1825 Treaty of Indian Springs by the Creek people. The county boundaries were created by the Georgia General Assembly on June 8, 1825; however they were not named until December 14, 1826. Troup County was named for George M. Troup, "The Hercules of State Rights" and an ardent advocator of Indian Removal despite being a cousin to Chief William McIntosh.
